Praying For Keeps “Prayer Conditioning” Blog #2

A long time ago, I discovered if you want to know something, ask an expert. If you want to know how to throw a football, ask Tony Romo. If you want to learn how to cook, ask Chef Gordon Ramsay. If you want to know how to take great selfies, ask Kim Kardashian. If you want to know how to pray, ask Jesus. No one has ever had as much faith in prayer or prayed as He did. In fact, one day the disciples came across Him praying and watched in amazement. When He finished they said, “Jesus, teach us how to pray”. Now those are some power-packed God-ordained words. I think we should tip our hats to the disciples, because prayer is the lifeline, the cornerstone in the Christian life. Yet many believers wonder why they just can’t seem to keep their lives in order. They do not feel the peace that surpasses all understanding. They lack guidance to fulfill their purpose. They do not tap into to the strength available in Christ and don’t know which way to turn. The answer is prayer. We will never be the people we were meant to be until we learn how to talk to God.

Juicy Fruit “Kindness & Goodness” Blog #3

Galatians 6:10 declares, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers”. God is spontaneous. He just acts. And in light of this verse, we understand that kindness is love in action. To put it our modern day vernacular, it is love on steroids. We will never even begin to grasp the totality of this super powerful, super-charged love. Thus, God spontaneously acts to show His love for us as His children, hence when opportunities arise we should not make haste and just go for it. Kindness is not passive, or neutral, or boring, or stagnant; it perpetuates itself all the more with practice. And as God is so spontaneous in showing His love for us, He wants us to do the same for others: the teacher who meant something to us, the person who needs money, the church that needs your gifts, your neighbors, etc. Act now! As we live this one and only life, we must reflect the character, nature, forgiveness, affirmation, and spontaneity found only in Christ Jesus.

Juicy Fruit “Patience” Blog

God tests our patience through interruptions, inconveniences, and irritations. Why? We have this “hate to wait”, microwave mentality, don’t we? Just take a step back and watch how people wait for elevators. Some bounce on their toes, while others sway. Many of us vainly stare at our reflection in the doors. My favorite, though, are the button-pushers. We tend to blow a fuse when we just sit down for a nice meal and the phone rings—again! Or, settling into the bathtub after a long stressful day when the doorbell rings, Ugh! By nature, we let little irritations get under our skin, like waiting for a parking spot to open. But losing patience only frustrates and exasperates these moments. Throughout the gospels, Jesus was interrupted numerous times, yet He remained calm and collected as He dealt with each situation. When such interruptions occur in life, remember God is testing us—and everything from God is good.

Living on a Prayer: “Temptation Island” Blog

Temptation is a part of life. There is no way to avoid it completely. Fortunately, temptation is not a sin. Sin only becomes sin when we sin. I have discovered, when the temperature of temptation is rising in my life, I typically feel depleted in some way. I find myself seeking satisfaction and comfort in some area. When you feel this, what do you do? For believers, the moment Christ enters our lives He imputes the person of the Holy Spirit in us. Thus when temptation hits we can say, “Holy Spirit, as my Comforter I pray you satisfy my need and calm my mind. Envelop me and cover me, that I may remain pleasing to God”. Try it! Put a watch to it the next time you feel tempted. In about sixty seconds, the temptation will slither back into the shadows. I Corinthians 10:13 states, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it”.

The Free Gift of God

The Free Gift of God

So the fourth thing is this ‑‑ and I will come back to Ephesians in a second ‑‑ the fourth thing is it’s our choice. We either receive this amazing gift or not. Now that’s heavy. Remember, Ephesians 2:8‑9 says we’re saved by grace through faith. In other words, what is grace? Grace is unmerited favor. I like the word grace. I saw this one time, it’s God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Isn’t that something? That’s what grace is, God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.

Some people say, “Well I have doubts. I’m not sure totally and completely about this deal.”If you show me somebody who doesn’t have doubt, I will show you somebody who has no faith. Doubt means you have faith. Now it’s our choice; we either receive this or not. So it’s by grace and it’s through faith. So by faith we either accept this gift or not. Do you remember when I quoted earlier Romans 6:23? It says, “For the wages of sin are death but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.”

Illus: For example, this is a great pen. This is a Mont Blanc pen. I collect pens. I spoke somewhere and someone gave me this after I spoke. They said, “I know you like pens; I want to bless you with this. Here’s this pen.”Well, when someone gave me this nice pen, this Mont Blanc pen, it demanded a response. I either said, “I’ll receive it,” or say, “I don’t want it.” Now I would be an idiot if I said I didn’t want a Mont Blanc pen. A Mont Blanc pen is a great pen. I said, “Thank you. Thank you very much.” I received it.So that’s the way this situation is; we either receive it or not. Now, I can’t make you do it. I can explain it to you. I can draw all of these diagrams, but this is what the Bible says about how to know God.

Men Are From Mars

Imagine men are from Mars and women are from Venus.  And one day the Martians were looking through their telescopes and they saw the beautiful planet of Venus.  They noticed the gorgeous creatures called women walking around on that planet.  They fell in love with these creatures and it motivated them to build spaceships.  They then travelled to Venus.  The Venusians welcomed the Martians with open arms and maybe they said something to them like this:  “Ahhhh, ahhhh.”  And they loved relating to the Martians.  They did a lot of stuff together.  And the relationships were based on harmony even though they were different, even though they realized men were from Mars and women from Venus.

One afternoon they looked and saw the planet earth and they decided to fly to earth and to live there for awhile and they did that.  In the beginning everything was A-OK but one morning both the men and the women woke up with selective amnesia.  Overnight they forgot the fact that they were different, that the differences were intentional and from that moment on Martians and Venusians, men and women, have been in conflict with one another.  Men expect women to act, feel and think they way men do.  On the other hand, women expect men to act, think and feel the way women do.  And you have got problems.  We forget that we are different.

To show you how different men and women are think about air travel.  Over the last few months I have been doing a lot of flying and I notice the amazing phenomenon.  The plane will land and as the plane is taxiing to the gate, even though the plane is usually packed, men are already thinking about being the first one off the aircraft.  Even though they are at the back of the plane, they think they can get ahead of the guy in the row ahead of them and they have their briefcases ready, their shoulder bags in tow and they are prepared for the stop.

Do you know Christ?  Do you really know Him?  Make sure you settle that issue and that account today.

A Biblical truth

This isn’t a big church.  We’re doing okay.  But we’re not trying to be the biggest church or the best church – just simply God’s church.  And until God tells us, “Hey, you can go ahead and put the aquarium and room and just shut it down,” that’s when we’ll shut it down.  But you know what?  That verbiage is not mentioned in the Bible.

I ask you, when you see a child apply a Biblical truth learned in Children’s Church into their life situation, if that really fires you up, then get in the game.  If seeing a freshly redeemed adult enter the waters of New Testament baptism, if that really does it for you, get in the game.  If seeing someone move from being unchurched to churched, or someone who was directionless move to a real focus, if that really says “wow” to you, get in the game.  If and when you get to the end of your one and only life, and you want to hear Jesus say, “Hey, you gave your life and your resources to that entity which was most near and dear to my heart, the local church,” if that does it for you, get in the game.

Now, I kind of left you hanging with the first story.  You’re probably wondering, “Ed, did coach Joe Williams ever ask Greg to come into the game?  I mean, he had his boxers on.  What happened?”  Well, he never asked Greg to get into the game.  Greg and I rode the pine for another contest.  However, God is asking all of us to get into the game.  He’s asking me and he’s asking you.  The question is, what’s on the inside?  What’s underneath?  Your uniform, or boxers?  Your uniform, or boxers?

Several years ago I saved up a lot of money for me due to a lot of speaking and other involvements.  I had $29,000 in one account.  To me, that is a lot of money.  Some of you are saying that is pocket change.  But for some others.

A word from God

One of the most difficult things I do, in fact the most difficult thing I do in my job, is public speaking.  If you read a stress level survey, number one is experiencing the death of a loved one; number two is speaking in public.  That’s what I do.  And I wish I could tell you I never get nervous.  I wish I could tell you that I just walk up here and just start talking. I have to bust my rear to come up here each and every weekend.  I can’t put the appointment off before 17,000 – 21,000 people—depending upon the Cowboy schedule.  I can’t say, “I don’t feel like going to church, Lisa.”  I can’t call in sick.  I’ve got to be here with my A game.  I’m saying a word from God.  That brings me a lot of stress and anxiety.  Man, when Wednesday rolls around I feel this pressure on my shoulders.  I’m saying, “Whoa, I’ve got to say a word from God.  It’s got to be biblical. Hopefully, It will be compelling and applicable to a seminary professor or someone who’s clueless about Christianity.  That’s a pretty stressful thing.

So within this stress, what do I do?  I’ve got friends and many times I’ll call my close friends just to laugh.  Many times I’ll call them at 6:30 – 7:00 a.m. if I’m facing a really hairy day—just to laugh.

I was thinking about my life. It funny, because people say, “Hey man, have a good weekend.”  I haven’t had a good weekend in a long, long time.  I have good weeks, but not good weekends.  My father and I talk about that a lot.  But usually on Saturdays, there’s a friend that I call who lives in another state. And the main thing we do on Saturday morning when we talk is, you guessed it, laugh.

It is probably a lot of money.  But money is relative.  Here is what I did.  I began to ride that camel.  I began to do the Harpo thing.

The Children of Israel by Ed Young

Ed Young said here is what happened.  The twelve spies, they go out.  They are gone for forty days and finally they return.  And I am sure when the children of Israel saw those spies emerge from the promised land, I bet you they were giving high fives, maybe the Hebrew band was going (short band imitation), they were happy.  And here is what the people say, the twelve spies get in front of the people and ten of the twelve spies, I repeat, don’t miss this one, ten of the twelve spies say this in Numbers 13:27, they gave Moses this account. We went into the land to which you sent us and it does flow with milk and honey.  Probably some people said, Praise you, brother, Amen and Amen.  It flows with milk and honey.  And they said, here is its fruits.  Wow, have you ever seen a mango that big in your life?  But something happens here in verse 28.  Something sad happens.  Something tragic happens.

The ten of the twelve spies become the first vision vandals.  They put on their visionary vandal masks and they begin to kind of extinguish God’s vision, they kind of pour some cold water on the subject.  Numbers 13:28.  But the people who live there are powerful.  You see, Moses we saw the people over there and they are big, Moses.  And the cities are fortified and very large.  Ed Young Ministries states these ten spies were robbing the vision.  Doesn’t it hurt if you have a creative idea at work or maybe around the neighborhood and suddenly you will see people put on the visionary vandal masks and take away the idea?  You know those people, don’t you, visionary vandals?  Al Average.  Steve Status-quo.  Mary Maintenance.  Just do enough to get by, don’t rock the boat, we have never done it this way, let’s form a committee, let’s go back to the way we used to do things.  It happened to God’s people.

And that brings us to the fourth fire fighting formula.  Grasp God’s hand as you are walking through the fire.  Grasp God’s hand as you are walking through the fire.
